SPRING VENTS
SPRING VENT CLEANING
With the introduction of spring vents to replace traditional mold vents, a method of cleaning had to be found. This fell on the mold shops to develop a technique which would not harm the spring vent but would clean the vent satisfactorily at minimum cost.
There are a couple of manufacturers of spring vents, of which only one allows the spring vent to be disassembled into two pieces for cleaning.

The industry discovered an ultrasonic tool that was designed to clean teeth. The cost was reasonable. Without disassembling the spring vent, the ultrasonic tool could remove any buildup and do no damage to the spring vent assembly. Employing the tool tip that came with the ultrasonic tool was successful, but. caused damage to the aluminum mold if the tool tip slid off the spring vent.

Kay-Zee Inc. has developed a tool tip to fit several of the ultrasonic dental cleaning devices employed by the mold shops. The common sizes of spring vents are 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm and 3.2mm. The tip was designed with a 2.0mm diameter, which should cause less damage to the aluminum mold material provided the setting on the ultrasonic tool is not set too high. The tool tip is 30mm long to reach the spring vents embedded between tread pattern elements. In addition, there is an air hole to allow air flow to cool the ultrasonic wand. The tool tip is straight rather than curved to minimize slippage of the tip off the spring vent. The tool tip is hardened to approximately 60 Rockwell.

Some ultrasonic tools on the market require a different fitting than M3X0.5mm internal thread. Please provide details of the fitment required. Adapters can be machined to suit.
